It was April 12, 1961, when humanity's relationship with the entire universe changed forever, thanks to the first orbital flight around our Planet. The journey of the Vostok spacecraft lasted a total of 108 minutes and indeed made history, making Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin the first human to undertake a journey into space.
Since then, constant research, missions, and studies have led to exceptional results, from the Moon landing (July 20, 1969) to the present day—the era of space stations, the search for life on Mars, and Samantha Cristoforetti's spacewalk.
It is to commemorate these incredible achievements that the International Day of Human Space Flight was established on April 12. A magnificent occasion that also reminds us that we are all inhabitants of Earth: looking from space toward our planet, no borders can be seen. The universe is a peaceful zone of collaboration, for a shared future.
