Leao's story is inextricably linked to the strength and tenacity of his mother Gabriela.
At Leao's birth, something immediately becomes apparent that hadn't emerged from the ultrasounds: a cleft lip and palate marks his little face. Gabriela is desperate and her life, already very complicated, becomes even more difficult when her partner leaves her, shortly after the little one's birth.
As a mother, however, she wants the best for her son's health and life and doesn't give up. She searches everywhere for help and, in the end, manages to find it. After a six-day journey, she arrives in Lima, welcomed and hosted by an acquaintance. Shortly after, she learns about the work of Operation Smile Peru!
Hope is rekindled, finally, especially after the first complete medical examination, until the first surgery on the lip. Subsequently, thanks to the assistance and careful explanations of the volunteers, Gabriela decides to stay in Lima to continue the treatment. Within a few months, the child is operated on again, this time on the palate, and definitively treated.
Today Leao is lively, cheerful and... plays a lot! And mother Gabriela, with her heart finally more at peace, thanks Operation Smile like this: "Thank you for changing my life. Before the surgery, every time I looked at my baby I would cry. I never thought I would see my son happy and that I would be happy again".
