A day dedicated to funny faces, smiles and symbols: every year on July 17th we celebrate World Emoji Day!
Emoji or emoticon?
These are two terms that we often use as synonyms, but they actually refer to two distinct things. Emoticons were born as far back as 1982, when the symbol : - ) was used for the first time in an online chat. They are therefore stylizations that mimic facial expressions through symbols.
Emoji, on the other hand, are actual graphic reproductions, much more realistic, born in Japan in the 1990s following the increasingly widespread use of images to accompany text messages. The use of emoji then spread throughout the world in the 2000s thanks to the proliferation of Apple iPhones.
The importance of a smile
Emoji accompany us every day and help us better express feelings and emotions, emphasize a concept, and joke around with our friends. And it's no surprise when we think that it all started with a smile : - ), that is, a simple and immediate smile. Because a smile represents joy, empathy, friendship.
The importance of a smile is well known to Operation Smile Italia Foundation, part of an international organization committed for over 40 years to ensuring a smile for children around the world who are born with a cleft lip and palate, providing care, free medical and surgical assistance in 40 countries. Cleft lip and palate is a congenital facial malformation that causes a cleft, or fissure, in the palate, gum and upper lip.
Treating a cleft lip and palate means bringing a smile back to a child's face.
