4 October marks World Animal Day, one more occasion to remind us of the importance of the protection and respect of the other small and large inhabitants of our planet.

Everyone can do their part, starting with the little things! A commitment that we at Bluon take seriously too, seeking above all to bring a little more safety into the everyday lives of our animal friends.

To celebrate this day together (and also for a healthy dose of good cheer), in the gallery we present 10 of the most bizarre and endearing animals whose existence you may not have known about.

1. Axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum). This charming salamander lives in Mexico, where its survival is sadly threatened by fishing, pollution and the gradual disappearance of its habitat.

2. Aye-aye (Daubentonia madagascariensis Gmelin). A primate of the rainforest of Madagascar, it is a nocturnal omnivore that uses its limbs, equipped with an opposable thumb, to move among the trees.

3. Blue dragon (Glaucus Atlanticus). This is a small venomous mollusc (at most 3 cm in length) that lives in the oceans. Its incredible colour allows it to blend in with the seabed to avoid predators.

5. Leaf sheep (Costasiella kuroshimae). A tiny sea slug typical of some coasts of Japan. The whole body measures around 1 cm and is studded with small green pinnacles.

6. Poodle moth (Artace Cribraria). The first sighting, made in Venezuela, dates back to 2009. The nickname comes from the white coat that covers the moth's body and legs.

7. Panda ant (Euspinolia militaris). Do not be fooled by its name: it is actually a wasp that lives mainly in Chile and Argentina. The name comes from its small size and its typical black and white colouring. The sting of the panda ant is counted among the most painful in the world.

8. Hippocampus bargibanti. A seahorse that lives in the coral reefs of the area between the Indo-Pacific and Oceania. Its appearance, characterised by the typical red tubercles, comes from the need to blend in among the corals to avoid predators.

9. Dumbo octopus (Opisthoteuthis californiana). This inhabitant of the deep is an octopus with a very singular appearance, characterised by short tentacles and two protrusions on its head that resemble ears. It lives between California and Japan.

10. Sea pig (Scotoplanes globosa). This is a sea cucumber that lives in the oceans. It is equipped with 4 dorsal eyes, which it uses to scrutinise its surroundings carefully, and a full 7 pairs of legs.
